DR. DANIEL NEFF HIS STORY

Dr. Daniel Neff

His Story

Daniel Neff  was the son of John and Elizabeth (Schener) Neff, both natives of Pennsylvania.  John born on April 13,1784.  Daniel and his twin John, born July 14,1826.  They were the fourth and fifth children of John and Elizabeth, one more sibling David was born in 1831.

The family left Pennsylvania in 1834 and moved to Ohio, where they lived for many years.  The parents both died in the same year, mother on Feb. 6,1873 and father Mar. 12, 1873

Daniel grew up on farm in Ohio, went to school in Dayton, and supplemented this course of medicine by attending Delaware Wesleyan University.  He then continued his medical training under the preceptor ship of J.J. McLlhenny M.D., and later attended medical college at Columbus, Ohio.  He later graduated from the medical department of the Western Reserve College of Cleveland.  While attending colleges, he taught school, to pay for his course work.  His first location in the practice of medicine was at Enon, Clarke County, Ohio.   In 1859 he moved to Litchfield, Illinois.

In 1856 he married Jane (Cannon), in Clarke , County Ohio. She was the daughter of John A. Cannon (Jan. 11,1777-Mar.6,1833 and Ellenor (Cross) Cannon (1788-1863{Illinois.} In the 1860 census he along with wife Jane, a 2 year old named Ellen E. Neff, his mother in law, Ellenor Cannon, sister in law Lucinda H. Cannon and brother in law John all lived together in Litchfield, Illinois.

In 1868 he was prevailed upon to move to Caldwell, County Missouri. In the 1870 census, Kingston Twsp, Kingston, Missouri there are only three people listed as living in the household.  Ellenor Cannon, I found in one source died in 1863, but did not find burial site.  The puzzling piece is that the child Ellen E. Neff is also missing from the 1870 census in Caldwell Co. Mo.  I doubt that she would have been left in Illinois, perhaps she also passed away, but I cannot find a death notice or site of burial. Also she could have been omitted for 1870 census, but I did not find her in 1880 census, nor did I find in Missouri Marriages ,Caldwell Co. Mo.Since moving to Caldwell County, he has held the position of County Physician, Pensioner Examiner, and was a prominent member of the County Medical Society.

In February 1873, his wife Jane passed away, which was in the same time period as that of his parents back in Ohio. I was unable to find the grave site of Jane Cannon Neff, in Missouri, Illinois or Ohio.

In information contained in the publication “Kingston the first 150 years, I found this paragraph”Dr Neff was a physician and manufacturer of Neff’s Family Medicine. He died very suddenly in his office.

I also found a marriage in October 17,1878 of a Daniel Neff marrying a Mary Sinclair in Mirabile, Missouri.

I also am unable to find the grave site of Dr. Daniel Neff in any of the Caldwell Co. Missouri Cemeteries.
