Verna Maurine Brown Malm

This was written by my mother Verna Maurine Brown Malm-April 20, 1956

My name is Verna Maurine Brown.  I was born December 3, 1902 in a house on Bellvue Street in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.  As a baby we moved to 449 East 6th South, same city, county, and state where I spent most of my childhood.  The house was later made into 2 houses and the number changed to 443 and 445 East 6th South.  As of this date the house still bears these 2 numbers.  The house was built by my grandfather Brown and later purchased by my mother and father.

My father was born in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah.  His full name was Samuel Vernon Brown. His father was John Brown who came from England in about 1863. He and one sister were the only ones in his family to join the church.  He was about 33 years old when he left England.  My fathers mother was Eleanor (Ellen) Caffall.  She too was born in England.  I don't know when she left England but she married my grandfather in the endowment house in Salt Lake City in 1874.

My mother was born in Richfield, Sevier Co, Utah.  Her name was Eliza Hugentobler.  Her father sold his birthright and left Switzerland and he came to America in 1866.  My mother's mother was also born in Switzerland.  Her name was Elisabetha Staheli, my mother's father was named Johann Jakob Hugentobler. They both died in Utah.

I lived in the 9th ward, Liberty Stake until I was married in 1925.  I attended the L.D.S. High School for 4 years working after school to pay my expenses.

After I finished school in June 1920 we moved to California (Hawthorne) for about 4 months and I worked for the Title Insurance and Trust Co. in Los Angeles.

We went back to Salt Lake City and I worked for Miller and Viele (Farm Loans) until shortly before I was married.  We were married by Bishop Graham at the county court house.

Our first home after I married was at 69 Van Buren Ave.  Then to 8th South across from Hawthorne School.  We then moved back to Browning Ave. for a short time.  We sold our home on Browning Ave and moved to my mother's home at 567 Denver st. in the rear of our old home at 445 E 6th South.  We lived there until 1938 when we moved to Inglewood California and bought our home at 570 Hargrave Street.

We have 3 children.  Keith Harold Malm married to Shirley Ann Burton.  They have 2 sons and 2 daughters.  Reed Vernon Malm our 2nd son and Linda Maurine Malm our daughter.
