Their Story

John Batson was born to parents Tobias Batson (b. 1827-Ohio-) and Rebecca L. (Blades) Batson (b.1833-1863) in Greene County, Missouri. In census of 1860 the family was living in Center, Greene Co. Mo. He was third child of 4 children born to family. An aunt, sister to mother, was living with family at this time also. His father, Tobias Batson, signed up for the Civil War with the Arkansas Confederate Army in 1861.  By 1863 Rebecca Batson had died leaving all 4 children below the age of 9 motherless.

Very difficult to ascertain the whereabouts of John Batson in 1870 census, but I did find a John Batson age 12 living in same county, township, and same post office , with a family Alfred O’Bannon and his wife.  Also another child , a girl 11yrs with last name of Lile living in same household.  Mr. Obannon was a Post Man.

In the census of 1880 I found a John Batson age 22, working as a farmhand in Daviess County, Missouri.  In 1884 this same John Batson joined in marriage with Eva Calvin, of Caldwell Co. Mo.

In 1886 a son Marshall B. Batson was born to John E. and E.L Batson. He died on September 22, 1887 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Hamilton, Mo.

In the census of 1900 John and Eva Batson were living in Kingston, Mo. With two children, Edward H.-11 and Grace B-4 (1895-1965). John listed his occupation as farmer at this time.

In 1910 the family was living in Mirabile, Mo. In 1920 they were living in Hamilton, Mo. He stated that they owned the home, and that he was a farmer working at Gould Farm in New York, Township.

John Batson died May 12, 1922 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Hamilton, Mo.

In the census of 1930, Eva Batson was living in Kansas City, Jackson Co. Missouri and listed as widow, renting a house. In 1935 she remained living in K.C. , Mo.

In the census of 1940 she was living in San Diego, California as a boarder with about 20 people. She died in San Diego, California in Nov.18, 1954 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Hamilton, Mo.
