How Great Grandparents, Joe Land and Kate Perdue got married

Joe Land had two wives: sisters Florence and Katherine (Kate) Perdue. The story of how he married his second wife was told to his great grandaughter, Jeri Steele by her grandmother, Ella Land Renfro.

Joe Land had two wives, sisters Florence and Katherine (Kate) Perdue. The story of how he married his second wife was told to his great grand-daughter, Jeri Steele, by her grandmother, Ella Land Renfro:

Joe Land's first wife Florence Perdue died 7 April 1901. Florence Land (nee Perdue ) had just given birth to her fifth child, Ella on 16 Jan 1901. She apparently got an infection as a result of the delivery because she never recovered during that almost three months. Her sister, Kate Perdue had inherited her family's land and was single. Her older sister Florence had married Joe Land on 2 Nov 1889 so she had been around Joe for the past 10 years.  Kate took baby Ella and her next older sister, Lexia to help Joe after the death of Florence.  Later, when Joe took them back to his house, the babies cried and cried.  He finally had to take them back to Kate to get them to settle down. They exchanged the two babies several times over the next few months.  After close to a year, Joe went to Kate and said he respected her, she had land that needed care and he had the 5 small children that needed a mother.  They got married on 9 Jan 1902 just before Ella's first birthday.

Yes, Joe and Kate Land are my great-grandparents. I'm in trying to delete the photo now.

Our Grand and Great-Grandparents looked at marriage a lot different than "Hollywood" has shown us. Kate was obviously a loving person - you showed that pretty well with your story. They truly were "great" grandparents.
