Giving of oneself

As I recall I have done a fair amount of volunteering such as circulationg petitions, collecting for various health aspects, and time donated to conventions.  However what

I am doing now is giving me the most reward.  The Episcopal church I attended for over 20 years is now a mission with supply priests.  However, several people have

established  a tutoring program for elementary students of Spanish background.  The children bring their homework for the next day and we assist them in completing it.

One evening I used flash cards in math with two boys who were very competetive.  They were so pleased with what they knew and it was extremely rewarding to me.

I have taught college studetns for many years and never children of the ages these young people are.  Their response and excitment is impressive.

I feel strongly about this group of individuals in light of the attitude of many Americans that immigrants should arrive on our shores speaking fluent English.

When volunteering includes an educational aspect you not only help in the short run but tremendously in the long term. Society as a whole reaps the rewards of your efforts. Nice to have people like you in the world Jan. I'm happy you took the time to write this.

I would be willing to bet that those young boys will look forward to their tutoring sessions as a result of their fun time with the flash cards and gain much in many ways. One spinoff I can see them receiving is their gain in self confidence.

Isn't it rewarding to see what education can do to "light up the eyes" of the learner. When we look to the fact that we are eternal beings, the things we can teach to others through volunteering are not just fleeting lessons, but carry through eternity. I try to remember this with my 7th and 8th graders who sometimes challenge every effort I try to make to help them empower themselves. Good for you, Jan! No one can easily measure what you are accomplishing.
