I hope My Wife Approves

When I was young and DUMB and before my wife died in childbirth in 1979 at the age of 28 . I was 32 years old and she was a stay at home Mom taking care of our two sons . I would go to work and people would ask me “ where does your wife work?” I would say “ oh, she doesn’t work.” After she died I FOUND OUT SHE DID WORK . I would go to work myself ; come home to my two sons cook supper ; wash dishes ; make sure they had there baths ( they were ages six and three at the time ) . And on weekends it was clean house ; cook ; wash dishes ( no dish washer ) ; do laundry ( washer no dryer ).

After a few months it got tiring and I got lazy . I quit putting clothes away . I would throw them on the bed . If we wanted clean clothes we had to dig through the pile of clean clothes that was piled on the bed because the closets were empty and all of the drawers were empty . Finally one weekend I said enough is enough . I spent the whole weekend folding and putting away clothes . To this day I do my own laundry and I always put my clothes up .

If I could talk to someone that is deceased it would my first wife. The birth mother of my two oldest sons I would ask her if I had done alright raising them and if she was mad at me about what happened to our son that died in 2006. He is the one that was three years old when his mother died . He ended up meeting a girl in High School that came from not a very nice family . She has told us before that her father and her smoked a joint together when she seven years old . Her father got my son started on that and introduced him to other people that did other things . The next thing you know he was getting deeper and deeper . He was drinking four to five 32 ounce beers per day plus his drug habit . His liver started shutting down . He had divorced his wife several years earlier and she has finally grew into a half way decent mother . They had a beautiful daughter that they named after my sons birth mother . She turns twelve years old this year .( And she’s rotten ; but I love her )

I know that my first wife didn’t want me try to raise our two sons on my own and didn’t want me to be lonely in this world . I ended up re-marrying a woman that I thought would make a good mother to my sons . BUT BOY WAS I WRONG, so after five years we got divorced . Then I met my current wife who I THINK WOULD BE GOOD FRIENDS WITH MY FIRST WIFE . I just hope they don’t gang up on me . But I did learn one thing . Just because someone stays at home doesn’t mean that they don’t work.

My oldest son ( the one that was six when his birth mother died ) He is a youth specialist for the State of Missouri ( he works with Juvenile Delinquents.

I hope my first wife approves of the way I have done . I did my best .

Charles you had a tough row to hoe and personally I think you did very well. Single parenting is really tough. Our oldest daughter had to do it with two daughters. She divorced her husband after his THIRD try in an alcoholic's rehab center. He left her high and dry with two young kids. I admire you for what you've done. Your story may well help someone else cope with things.

This is a really powerful story, Charles. Thank you so much for sharing it. There is no doubt that your wife approves of what you have done.
