My mother

My mother was born in Ft. Kent, Maine in 1903.  She was the third of eight children.  Two of her siblings died.  Her father owned a tremedous amount of land but due to his poor eyesight he could not work and the land was sold off to support the family.  My mother became a teacher and taught while living in Maine before she married my dad.  When they moved to Connecticut she did part time teaching.  Once the war effort  began she worked in a factory for a few years.

I have many great memories of her reading to me, making cookies, and making a very special birthday cake fo my sixth birthday.  She made my clothes and taught me to make my own and how to knit, among other things.

However, the greatest gift she gave me was teaching me to think, and to stand on my own two feet.

My mother died in 1983 a few days before her 80th birthday.

My family is from Maine too Jan. We called them, "maineiacs" but if there were people known to stand on their own two feet, they are it. Sweet story.

I've always heard that people from Maine (Mainers? Mainites?) are tough, resilient and resourceful. Sure sounds like your mom fits that profile. Lovely tribute to her, Jan.

Mothers are the first and in many if not most cases, the best teachers.
