Our Most Loyal Friend Died Today

Today my family shared a very sad experience. Our long-time loyal friend Bob, our family dog for almost 15 years, was put to perpetual sleep. This is not the first time we have made the decision to euthanize a family member. We still covet the ashes of Lillian, the equally loyal family dog our kids grew up with. Now there is another urn of ashes.

Bob came to us as a stray at our Smoky Mountain home we called, Sky Ranch. He was completely covered in ticks and mange, his paws bleeding so badly he fell to the ground when they touched out gravel drive.

He was so emaciated we didn't think he would survive. So we brought him to the vet to bring him back to health, clean him up and get his shots, all the while hoping his owner would respond to our lost dog flyers.

After a few days of rehab and no owner claiming him, we took him back to the ranch to save him from being euthanized at about 10 months of age. With regular feeding and care he had already put on some weight and looked much more like a dog than a skeleton. My first reaction was, Wow! You're a Big ol' Boy! Hence, the reason we named him BOB. Big Ol' Boy.

Bob had the best life a dog could wish for after that. He had some of the best friend dogs including his little buddy Banjo, cousin Sandy and his true girlfriend, Shortie, among others.

In the end, he succumbed to old age, looking more like the Bag OBones when we first met.  A few years ago, I created a crude video about Bob and his friends when he almost died from a snake bite. Thank God he survived. Today our family watched the video, having lost most of his friends depicted in it.

I hadn't realized the immense power of a pet tribute video until now. For anyone who has ever lost a family pet, after giving years of unconditional love, I cannot imagine a better way to give him or her an honored place in family history than to produce one of these.

This video treasure allows us to remember him the way he would want us to, his well-deserved legacy. It may not be the most professional production, but even Spielberg couldn't make one better this very day.

Ahh Luhhh You Beeee!

In memory of our dear loyal and loving friend Bob, please take a few minutes to enjoy his life in pictures. Thank you!

After painfully making this decision for our sweet baby Bob we called our boys Justin and Tyler. They were ready to drop everything and come to be with Bobby. I love my boys. Justin slept with him that night on Bob's foam bed on the floor. Tom joined him so now Bob was sandwiched between both of them. Bob coughed on and off all night. I made the call the next day to Lap of Love. Doctor Jennifer Cook changed her schedule to come to us today. We will all be here with Bob and on and off up till this time today have loved on him, kissed him, reminisced stories with family and friends about Bobby and told him he was free to go to Heaven and we will meet him on the other side. I also told him to run to Shortie when he sees her! Shortie and Bobby would howl together, Shortie with high tones and Bobby with his low tones, it was so sweet to see these two gentle pups together. Rick and Judy, Shortie's Mom and Dad, came to visit last night with one of their new pups Ellie May, she went right over to Bobby and kissed him. We shared all the great stories created when we lived up on the mountain in Tellico Plains at Sky Ranch. Rick and Judy were some of the only people we trusted to take care of our Bobby after he lost his eyes. Justin and Bruce would keep him too. This hasn't been easy for us as Bobby is just so sweet! Bobby felt the first needle and jumped but soon he was sleeping and then we loved on him more to let him know he could go and we were there for him. Doctor Cook helped us and stayed right there with us guiding us through every stage. Bob started breathing hard and spit up some blood. The second needle took affect within minutes and he was resting peacefully. We all cried and loved on him once again, then had to wrap him in a doggie diaper before Tom picked him up to carry to the Doctors van where he was covered in a blanket and taken away. We all kissed him again and then all huddled in a family group hug to cry once more together for Bob. Doctor Cook clipped some of Bobbies hair for us and made a paw print to leave with us. She was so caring and loving and did a very professional job that I dare say not too many people could do, said our son Tyler. Justin kept his mindful eye on everyone including our other pups Banjo and Sasha, who he said when Bob was getting the shots, walked over to each side of the room and laid quietly as if they knew he was leaving. I will miss my gentle giant with his heart of gold and his sweet fake grape smell on his head. I love you Bobby now run to your friends in Heaven, Mama
PS Papa and I will be sad and will cry without you but we are happy you are out of any discomfort. Please give us a sign that you are okay.

BoB was so much more than a special dog, he was my friend and part of our family. Judy and I always looked forward to "dog sitting" BoB when Tom & Chris would travel out of town. He was a perfect gentleman and the easiest house guest we've ever had. He loved our dog "Shorty Girl" (who died of cancer). They played and played as if they were soul mates. I loved to spoil BoB on his visits with good treats for a special "puppy dog". Whenever I'd lie down on the floor or couch, BoB was there, pressing up against my side. He loved all people and all other dogs and pets, always tolerant, well mannered, and very considerate. There was nothing anybody could ever do to make BoB bite you. He was 100% gentle and sweet.

I remember the very first day I met BoB. We were meeting Tom and Chris at the Bistro, and all of a sudden I see this huge dog walking toward us with Tom. My initial reaction was fear for my two dogs who were walking beside us. That immediately passed as BoB's gentle nature became obvious at once, and my dogs were at ease.

BoB was one lucky boy... Tom and Chris gave him the very best home that any pet could ever have. BoB was part of the entire Cormier family. I have so many wonderful stories that should be told about BoB with Tom & Christine. One of the funniest I'll call "Big Boy Pee Pee". We were at the Sky Ranch one night... Tom said I'm going outside for "Big Boy Pee Pee". BoB got up off the leather couch and followed Tom. I was curious so I followed them out the kitchen door and into the yard. Tom explained the ritual he performed each night before bedtime. Tom would pee, then BoB would look for some tall grass, walk over it so his belly would get scratched, then do his business. Tom explained that was the fastest way to get BoB to do his business. Well, the first time we dog sat BoB, I learned that I also needed to follow this ritual, otherwise BoB would just hold it. So to this day, I now go out with my 2 dogs (both female) and we all do "big boy pee pee" every night before bedtime. I will forever continue to think of BoB every night when this happens.

BoB, you will live on in our hearts forever. We love you.

Rick thank you for that beautiful tribute to Bobby. That's why you and Judy were God parents to our Bobby. He never had it so good until he stayed with the two of you and your precious pups Shortie Girl and Darla. Hugs, Christine

Gee Rick, you reminded me of Big Boy Pee! I forgot all about it and it really is a special thing.

I want anyone reading this to know that we lived on a mountain surrounded by a million aces of national forest. So, we didn't just go out into a suburb and you know what. Same with Rick, who lives in the same remote mountains to this day. Thank you for your kind words Rick and thank everyone who has expressed themselves on this story. It is his legacy now!

Tom and Christine,

Now this is the way to remember a friend....you both said it in a very beautiful and memorable way. This is one story I will re-read in the future, because it contains such powerful imagery. As they say, if you have never loved a dog you are missing out on one of life's greatest gifts.

You are so right Dick, our pups and other furry friends have filled gaps and have given us such happiness. I always say give your child a pet and teach them to care for someone other than themselves, way before they have a family of their own. Pets need us and depend on us for most everything and in return, they will shower you with love and loyalty forever.
Hugs, Christine
