Moving To A New Town

When I was thirteen my Dad got a notice from his employer which was the pipeline division of Amoco Oil , that he was going to have to move to another town . He was being transfered to a town 50 miles away which wasn't that far but in the early 60's their wasn't any interstate hiway's . So since my Dad was 51 years old and he didn't think he stood much of chance getting a very good job at his age he decided that he had better move . My mother did not like the idea but there wasn't much she could do about it . They were buying home so they rented out to my Grandma Beavers for the amount they had to pay for rent in the new town . $50 per month . My older brother was senior in high school so he stayed with Grandma Beavers until he graduated high school and then he went into the Army . My Dad , my Mother and me moved to the new town and I had about 3 months of school left in the 8th grade . The new school couldn't get my school records and I ended up failing 8th grade . I took 8th grade over again in the new town and I was in the Band and had wood working shop class . I excelled in Band and wood shop class but I failed English because you was supposed to make book reports and I hated reading . Don't get me wrong . I love my Mother dearly and I had a wonderful mother but one thing she did do wrong in my childhood . When we lived in this town she hated it soooo much she would ask me " Charles ; do you want to go to school or stay home and play games with me or maybe " do you want to stay home and go pay bills with me ?" What do you think a 14 year old kid is going to say . The next year I went onto 9th grade but I had to take 8th grade English again . I finally passed 8th grade English but I failed 9th grade English by the time I got to 12th grade I was aceing Band and wood shop class but I had 10th Grade English ; 11th Grade English and 12th Grade English and was failing all 3 classes . That was 1965 . My father had a heart attack in March 1965 and the Doctor told him that he would never work in the oilfields again and live to tell about it . So in March 1965 we moved back to my hometown and I dropped out of school .

I have to know where this story goes from here. Funny that I loved wood shop and band too. I played the licorice stick....better known as the clarinet.

Great story Charles. I know a lot more than I did. Book reports! An English teacher's FAVORITE way of making a kid HATE to read. Don't feel bad - in my little high school I wasn't allowed to take Senior English. It was an optional class designed for kids who would go to college. They said that would not be me.
