No date for me tonight.  A busy Friday night at the fraternities and here I sit.  In Smedes Parlor.  As the fellows arrive to fetch their dates, I get their names and page the girls that their date has arrived.  Each of us has this duty twice a semester.  A dull duty indeed.  Would rather be partying.

Dull, thast is, until a certain young man enters the parlor.  Wow was my only thought.

“Your name, please?” I stammered a bit.

“Doesn’t matter,” he said, “let’s run away together.”

“Not tonight, not with me, but you can run away with your date if you’ll give me her name.”

“I’m serious,”  he said.  “I’ve forgotten my date’s name.  Let’s get married.  Tonight.  What time do you get off?”

“I can’t go out on page-duty night.  What’s your date’s name?”

“I’m not taking her out.  I’ll pick you up tomorrow night at 7.  What’s your name?”

“I’ll be down here, waiting.  What’s your name?”

“Pri***** S. Ca***** IV, at your service, mam, forever.”

The next day I checked the Lizard Lists on each floor of each dorm at St. Mary's.

Yeap, I found his name penciled in.  From room to room I went, asking why his name was on the list - a list indicating that the chaps were not to be trusted.

Finally, one of my fellow classmates said, "He stood me up last night."

Ouch.  I was the first classmate to be added to the Lizard List once folks found out I was dating him -- the first St. Mary's girl to make it to the Lizard's List; I don't think it was an honor, but I took it as one....

Forever was not to be with IV and me, but we surely had the time of our lives for a year or two!
